Questions Related To Rental Cars

Do I have to participate in the rental car company's toll program? Is cash accepted on the expressways?

Cash is accepted on all expressways managed by the Expressway Authority. You are not required to have a transponder or participate in the rental car's toll pass program.

It is important to note, however, that on- and off-ramp toll plazas require exact change in coins. So, if you choose to pay with cash, you might want to keep a roll of quarters in the car with you.

What do I do if I am in a rental car?

Most rental car companies have programs that offer rental car customers an easier way to travel Florida’s toll roads. The companies provide E-PASS and SunPass with constantly updated lists of rental car fleet license plate numbers so that rental companies can be billed for tolls incurred by their customers.

What if my vehicle rental company does not offer a toll program?

An image of the license plate will be captured on camera and a bill for the toll will be sent to the vehicle rental company, who will match the toll charges with the person renting the vehicle. The vehicle rental agency may pay the toll bill on your behalf and charge you extra fees for their time and service, based on your rental agreement.

What happens if I don’t sign up for the rental car company’s toll program and I drive on the Expressway?

A bill for the toll will be sent to the rental car company, who will match the toll charges with the person renting the car. The rental car agency may pay the toll bill on your behalf and charge you extra fees for their time and service, based on your car rental agreement. Others may reassign the toll charges via completion of an affidavit, as outlined in the Florida Statute.
